Pakistan Fires at LoC During Srinagar Visit: Attack in Pahalgam

Pakistani forces opened fire at multiple locations along the Line of Control (LoC) on Friday, triggering a swift response from Indian troops. The incidents come amid heightened tensions in Jammu and Kashmir following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 tourists.

Defence sources confirmed reports of ceasefire violations from the Pakistani side, stating that the firing was reported from several locations along the LoC. A specific incident of ceasefire violation occurred in the Nowgam sector of Handwara in the Kupwara district. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties in the cross-border firing.

“There were incidents of small arms firing at some places on the Line of Control initiated by Pakistan,” a Defence source was quoted as saying by PTI. “The firing was effectively responded to,” the source added.

Pakistan Fires at LoC During Srinagar Visit: Pahalgam Terror Attack

The renewed aggression from across the border coincided with a visit by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi to Srinagar. The Army chief is in Jammu and Kashmir to conduct a comprehensive review of the security situation in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. During his visit, top Army commanders are expected to brief him on the ground realities and evolving challenges in the region. It remains unclear whether Gen Dwivedi will travel to Pahalgam as part of his itinerary.

Meanwhile, a separate encounter broke out in the Bandipora district of north Kashmir. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Kolnar Bazipora area of Bandipora after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists. During the operation, terrorists opened fire on the security personnel, triggering a fierce gunfight.

In a statement, the Indian Army said, “On April 25, based on specific intelligence input regarding presence of terrorists, a joint search operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the general area of Kolnar Ajas, Bandipora. Contact was established and a firefight ensued.”

The situation remains tense in the region as security forces continue their operations against terrorist elements. This latest encounter follows a deadly incident in Udhampur on Thursday, where a soldier from the Indian Army’s special forces unit was martyred during a gunfight with terrorists. The encounter took place in the Dudu-Basantgarh area during a cordon and search operation initiated after reports of terrorist presence in the region.
