5 Facts About Sela Tunnel : The construction of Sela Tunnel will reduce the travel time between Tezpur and Taung by more than an hour.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Chela Tunnel as part of his one-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh. The tunnel was built at a cost of ₹ 825 crore and connects Tezpur with Dawang near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
Here are 5 facts about the Sela Tunnel
The Sela Tunnel will be the longest bi-lane tunnel in the world at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet above sea level. The purpose of this tunnel is to overcome the challenges caused by snowfall and landslides on the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang road and ensure connectivity in all weather conditions.
This project, implemented by the Border Road Organization (BRO), includes two tunnels and a connecting road. Tunnel 1 is a 980 meter long single tube tunnel and Tunnel 2 is a 1555 meter long double tube tunnel with two lanes, one for traffic and one for emergency services. The access road between these tunnels is 1200 meters.
The foundation stone of the Sela Tunnel Project was laid by Prime Minister Modi on February 9, 2019. The implementation of this huge project required over 90 lakh man-hours, with an average of 650 workers and support staff involved in the project over the past five years. Around 71,000 tons of cement, 5,000 tons of steel and 800 tons of explosives were required for construction.
The Sera Tunnel has modern features such as jet fan ventilation, firefighting equipment and SCADA control monitoring to increase safety and efficiency.
- The Sela Tunnel is 400 meters below the Sela Pass and is an important pass even in winter. This tunnel contributes to the rapid movement of troops, weapons and machinery along the Sino-Indian border.
