OpenAI reveals Sora
In a new development towards generative AI, the developers of ChatGPT have introduced a new tool that can instantly create short videos in response to entered commands. The new Microsoft-backed OpenAI text-to-video generator is called Sora. Big tech companies like Google and Meta have demonstrated similar technologies in the past, but OpenAI is way ahead in terms of quality.
Following the announcement of Sora’s software, a social media user told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, “Sam, please don’t make me homeless,” to which he replied, “They’re making a video for you, what do you want?” One user suggested: “Hmmm, a monkey playing chess in the park.” Altman immediately shared a high-quality video of Sora on the X platform.
It is currently available to the red team to help identify bugs in the AI system and for artists, designers and filmmakers to get feedback on the model, the company said in a statement. According to OpenAI, Sora can mix up the spatial details of a trail and have difficulty following a particular camera path.
“Sora is able to generate complex scenes with multiple characters, specific types of motion, and accurate details of the subject and background,” the statement said, adding that it can create multiple shots within a single video.
In addition to making a video from text prompts, Sora can also animate a still image, the company writes in a blog post.
OpenAI reaches $2 billion in revenue during development
OpenAI also said it is developing tools to determine if a video was created by Sora.
Last year, MetaPlatforms updated its EMU image generation model with two AI-driven features that can edit and create videos based on text prompts.
