Intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting: The American Heart Association released only an executive summary, leaving scientists to speculate on the details of the study protocol. According to the AHA, the study was peer-reviewed before publication.
Lifestyle interventions for weight loss have gained attention as new generations of medications contribute to weight loss. Some doctors questioned the study’s findings, saying the results could have been skewed by differences such as underlying heart health between fasting patients and a comparison group that ate 12 to 16 hours a day.

Long-term research
Intermittent fasting: “Time-restricted feeding is a popular means of reducing calorie intake,” said Keith Fullen, emeritus professor of human metabolism at the University of Oxford, in a statement to the UK Science Media Centre. “This study is important in demonstrating the need for long-term research into the effects of this practice. However, this summary leaves many questions unanswered.”
Researchers led by Victor Zhong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine analyzed data from about 20,000 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study also examined questionnaire responses and mortality data from 2003 to 2019. Because it relies in part on forms that allow patients to remember what they ate over a two-day period, scientists say there is room for error. Half of the patients were men, their average age was 48 years.
It’s not known how long the patients continued intermittent fasting, but researchers estimate they did, Zhong said.
Fasting patients are mostly young men
Intermittent fasting: In an email, he said the fasting patients are mostly young men with higher body mass indexes and food insecurity. They also had lower rates of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “Although we took all of these variables into account in our analysis, the positive association between eight hours of time-restricted feeding and cardiovascular mortality remained,” Zhong said.
The abstract was presented at the AHA’s Lifestyle Scientific Sessions meeting in Chicago.
