18 streaming platforms blocked: According to an official statement by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, 19 websites, 10 apps (7 on Google Play Store and 3 on Apple App Store) and 57 social media accounts have been blocked in India.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in India, 19 websites, 10 apps (7 on Google Play Store and 3 on Apple App Store) and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms are not accessible to the public. Thursday, which was canceled.

Removal of 18 OTT platforms
On March 12, Mr. Thakur announced the removal of 18 OTT platforms for publishing obscene and vulgar content.
The latest decision was taken after consultation with other ministries of the Government of India and experts in the fields of media and entertainment, women’s and children’s rights under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
“A significant portion of the content published on these sites has been found to be obscene, indecent, and depict women in a demeaning manner. It depicted nudity and sexual activity in many inappropriate contexts, such as teacher-student relationships, inappropriate family relationships, etc. The content contained sexual innuendo and in some cases any topic. “There are long stretches of obscene and sexually explicit scenes that are socially unacceptable,” the report said.
The release states that the content primarily violates Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the IPC and Section 4 of the Prohibition of Illicit Women Act, 1986.
More than million downloads
One of the OTT apps recorded more than 1 million downloads on the Google Play Store, while the other two recorded more than 50 million downloads. In addition, these OTT platforms make extensive use of social media to release trailers, special scenes and external links with the aim of attracting viewers to their websites and programs. The total number of followers on the social media accounts of the OTT platforms involved is said to have exceeded 3.2 million.
The Ministry of IandB is continuously conducting awareness activities with OTT platforms and their self-regulatory bodies set up under the Information Technology Rules 2021 through conferences, webinars, workshops, etc., a statement said.
Promoting the growth of the OTT industry
The Government of India is committed to promoting the growth and development of the OTT industry. In this regard, several steps have been taken including launching the first OTT Awards for web series at the 54th International Film Festival of India, collaborating with OTT platforms in the media and entertainment sector and creating a light regulatory framework.
